For over 40 years Robert and Betty Plouffe have worked at the heart of the Saco community, building the Saco Pay and Save into the well-established business it is today. The Saco Pay and Save got its’ start in 1982 in a 1900+/- square foot building on Front Street in Saco, Montana right on Highway 2, easily accessible to locals and passersby alike, as one can’t just drive through Saco without stopping in to sample Robert’s newest flavor of meat sticks or specialty bacon! Locals are treated with a well-stocked, exceptionally clean grocery store, and area ranchers keep the stores’ meat department in constant business, butchering approximately 550 steers and 350 pigs per year. A longtime supporter of local 4-H, Saco Pay and Save is in full production at county fair time, with many of the animals sold being delivered right to the Saco Pay and Save for processing. Equipment at the Saco Pay and Save has been continually updated, with some of the newest technology in place and included in the sale. You won’t find a cleaner meat shop anywhere! In 2000 Robert and Betty expanded the business, building an 8000+/- square foot, 80’ x 100’ addition to the original building, with 6 walk in coolers, a state-of-the-art meat cutting room, Smoke room and space to display groceries and supplies of all sorts. Saco Pay and Save currently provides employment for 9 full time employees who work alongside the owners, each well trained in one or more areas of the business. The owners are longtime residents of the community and while they are ready to retire, they aren’t leaving Saco and are more than willing to provide the training necessary to get the new business owner off to a great start. The business is well rounded, with multiple revenue sources. Currently 1/3 of the business’ revenue is provided by the grocery store, another 1/3 by the custom meat cutting department and the final 1/3 provided by the smoked meat products that are Robert’s pride and joy, and a sure favorite of anyone who has ever stopped into sample one of his variety of flavors of bacon, meat sticks or sausages. The business could surely be expanded to provide Saco Pay and Save’s original products to a wholesale market, or by simply shipping products around the country to those who know well the quality in each individually prepared package. The Saco Pay and Save is well oiled machine, with the potential of many years of success still in its future. Robert and Betty and ready to pass the torch and are looking forward to assisting the new buyer in taking over the business they’ve so painstakingly perfected.
